1. Implement a one-touch cleaning rule
You’re not alone if you want to skip the dishes and head straight to Netflix. Yet, when the sink piles up, it’s even more challenging to summon your will to clean. That’s why it’s important not to leave any messes behind.
When you go to grab an item from your bedroom, put away the clothes on your floor. Before you cook dinner, you’ll want to take a few steps to create a clear workstation, such as disinfecting the counter and clearing out the fridge.
2. Get rid of clutter
Let’s face it — like the rest of us, you probably own too much stuff. Over time, those things become a bit of a burden. They take up a ton of space and make it a lot harder to clean. Why not take a weekend to reassess your items?
You’ll typically find clutter behind cabinets and inside drawers, so start there. Take out every piece and consider its use. For example, do you need to keep those board games you haven’t played in years? Don’t let them collect dust. Instead, donate to your local thrift store. You should do the same for other objects, like clothes and toys.
3. Keep products on hand
You’re finally about to tackle that massive load of laundry when you realize that you don’t have any detergent. To make sure your apartment stays clean, try to stock up on wipes and sprays at intervals throughout the year. When you have certain products within reach, you’re more likely to use them.
Dedicate a cabinet to all of your cleaning-related materials. Keep sponges and dusters together. A container of disinfectant wipes and a bottle of all-purpose spray work wonders. You don’t need to fill up your pantry, as a small set of supplies can go a long way. Whenever you’re about to run out, try to purchase a refill as soon as you can.
4. Create a schedule
It’s OK if you don’t dust your shelves and scrub your counter tops daily. We’re all human, and a lot of us don’t have the time to stay on top of these tasks. That said, you should make an effort to clean more often than not.
A terrific way to build a routine is to formulate a schedule. Some people like to follow monthly agendas, but it’s also smart to stick to a plan that tackles one room every day. On Mondays, focus on your floors — sweep, vacuum and mop everywhere in your apartment. Then, head to your bathroom on Tuesdays to sanitize the toilet and shower. Maintain the same system throughout your home over the week.

If you make your bed when you wake up, you’re more likely to complete the rest of your responsibilities. That’s because you feel a sense of accomplishment and motivation. A tidy bed can also create a much cleaner room.
When your bed looks put together, so does the rest of your space. Do your best to fluff your pillows and straighten your covers. You’ll also find that you notice spots and stains more clearly when you get up close and personal with your sheets.
